How To Cure An Itchy Flaky Scalp
find out how I got rid of my itchy flaky scalp
I'm in my mid 30's now, and for as long as I remember, I've had an itchy, flaky scalp. As a teenager, I was prescribed special shampoos, told to wash my hair less, more, use cold water, hot water, avoid conditioner, use more etc etc but nothing worked.
Over the years, I have spent a fortune on things claiming to fix the problem, but nothing has got rid of it - until now.
Last Summer, a friend suggested I try The Body Shop's Ginger Anti Dandruff shampoo. I figured I'd give it a go, as I had nothing to lose.
It has an RRP of £8 for 400ml, but there's always a code for 40% off knocking around online, so I paid much less than that. After the first couple of uses, I didn't notice much improvement, but I stuck with it. After around 4 weeks of using just the Ginger shampoo and a little Argan oil on the length of my hair (avoiding the scalp completely), I noticed much less itchiness. After around 12 weeks of use, my flakiness was 90% reduced.
I have never used a lot of hair products, so can't say whether dry shampoo, mousse or gel etc will prevent the shampoo working, but I am now able to wear black tops without constantly checking my shoulders for dandruff and flaky scalp - for the first time in my adult life!
The shampoo smells strongly of Ginger - not my favourite smell, but its totally worth putting up with smelling like a biscuit to be itch free. It is clear and really runny so you do need to be careful when pouring it onto your hand. I find the 400ML bottle lasts me 3 months now, despite having long, thick hair.
I wash my hair twice a week now, and I found the ginger shampoo made a big difference in my greasy roots too. I was washing it every other day a year ago, as my roots would get really greasy - probably due to my scratching my itchy scalp so much. I don't blow dry my hair and I haven't used my straighteners in months either. (I have been embracing my curls on day 1 & 2 of washing then sticking it up in a bun until the next wash day).
Now, If I could find some motivation to do more than just stick my hair in a "mum bun" most days, I'd be a happy lady!
