What ever happened to office romances?
remember when people used to meet their significant other at work
Unless you live in a cave, you've probably seen at least 5 Online Dating adverts this past month alone. Online Dating seems to be the in thing, and it's hardly surprising when you see all the different websites out there now. Back in 2005 when I dabbled, there were probably 3 online dating sites, and no smartphones or apps to allow you to communicate on the go. Times have definitely changed since hubby and I got together.
Back in the day, when I was using my old faithful Windows 98 PC, online dating wasn't particularly easy - or convenient. I still lived at home, and the PC lived in the spare bedroom, so I would have to go in there to peruse potential matches or reply to messages. It didn't take me long to realise it was far too much effort, and go back to more traditional methods of finding dates.
I was with my first ever boyfriend for around 18 months. We met when I was 16 and he was 19, in a night club. This was in the year 2000. I had a mobile phone but said boyfriend didn’t. He was a complete technophobe. I wonder what he’d make of sites like WeLoveDates?
A friend of mine has recently got back into dating, and she said last week how hard it is to just ask someone out now. She said it's almost like people rely on the personal information they view in online profiles to make a decision, and aren't interested in just meeting people at work or when socialising any more. This is all well and good - IF you're safe and 100% the person you've been chatting to online is who they say they are. I think if I were online dating now, I'd definitely be asking for selfies of them with something specific so I could be sure they weren't hiding behind a fake profile photo.
Maybe it's just me, but I used to love a good office romance? Also - what happens if you register with an online dating site, and find yourself matched with an ex? OR WORSE... YOUR DAD! There are specific sites for most "types" of relationships too though, so as long as your dad sticks to the "mature dating sites" and you avoid those, you should be ok! I spotted last week there are black dating sites now too. I'm not sure how I feel about that, but a quick google search tells me there's a caucasian only site, too.
After doing a little research into online dating, it's clear to see that it's a lot easier to weed out those who are only looking for one thing, the players and serial cheaters. My friend let me log into her profile and see some of the grossness which had been sliding into her inbox. Seriously boys.... Most ladies want to be wined and dined, not bombarded with shots of your anatomy. Imagine the inbox belonged to your little sister - how would you feel about guys sending her messages like those you send...?
Compliment, chat about mutual interests and KEEP IT CLEAN - at least for the first few messages!
Call me old if you want to, but I don't think you can beat a good office romance! Did I ever mention that I quit my job to go and work alongside hubby when he was getting his first office? I think the thought of him sharing that cosy communal staff room and kitchen were a little much for my inner green eyed monster...!
What's your opinion on office romances? Are you a fan of online dating? I'd love to hear your thoughts!
