Today I’m sharing 4 great free UK family days out. If you’re anything like me, you’re already worrying about how you’ll survive the school holidays, without breaking the bank. Between keeping the kids entertained and replacing all of their suddenly too-small clothes, it’s always an expensive time of year. With that in mind, today I’m sharing some free UK family days out. Whether your family loves the great outdoors or exploring historical buildings, there’s something for everyone!

Free UK Family Days Out

One thing you can be sure about in the UK is the unpredictable weather. Even when it’s Summer, that doesn’t mean you’ll need your factor 30 every day. So it’s always good to have some indoor venues up your sleeve as a backup. Read on for some inspiration and 4 great free UK family days out ideas.

Free UK Family Days Out – Indoor Activities

Museums

Museums are the obvious choice here. So many museums in the North West of England are free to enter, it’s insane not to mention them. There are over 20 of them in London, too. A quick google search for “free museum” and the town you’re in should find your local ones.

If you’re close to Greater Manchester, I’d highly recommend visiting Ordsall Hall and the Salford Museum and Art Gallery. Both offer an amazing insight into life in the North, in the centuries gone by. Ordsall Hall is a Tudor Manor House, while Salford Museum has a Victorian street you can explore. The below photo was taken at one of the free sessions at the Salford Art Gallery And Museum. The kids got to dress up in Victorian clothes and learn how clothes were washed back then.

Libraries

Local libraries are worth a visit on rainy days too. Our local ones have regular activity days over the Summer, so it’s worth checking yours to see what’s on. Many have baby and toddler classes happening, so it’s best to avoid those sessions. Some do things like lego sessions and comic book creation clubs during the holidays though, so it’s not just about choosing a new book.

Local Shopping Centre

We live near the Trafford Centre. They have free events and activities running during the school holidays. Things like “Egg Hunts” at Easter, and even a free giant sand pit in the Summer. So check what your local mall is running as well.

Outdoor Activities

We are big fans of the usual things like picnics in the park or trips to the seaside, but we love doing different things too. Jumping in muddy puddles after a rainy day is a great way to let off some steam. (Make sure you take a towel, and wear removable layers though, or the car will be filthy*

Geocaching

Geocaching is on my to-do list for this Summer. I think having something to search for when we walk the dogs or visit the park will add a new dimension to our adventures.

Searching for painted rocks is another free thing now too. In our local area, there are Facebook groups full of people discussing which rocks they’ve painted and where to go to find them. You can even get the kids to paint some on a rainy day, then hide them on a sunnier one.

Swim Safe

If your child is aged 7-14 and can swim 25 metres in a pool, why not take them to one of the free Swim Safe sessions? These are running all across the UK this Summer and will teach kids how to swim safely outdoors. My kids aren’t old enough for this yet, but it sounds great for those who are.

This post from latestdeals.co.uk lists quite a few free days out, too. Have you got any more suggestions for free UK family days out? Feel free to share them in the comments!
